food for thought #1: teach the children from the start that life is absurd

you are human today and that makes you intelligent. your judgment might be impaired from time to time, but you are human and as all humans do---they make mistakes.

Sunday

fiercely solitary--and terribly elegant

The poorest circulation point on my body is my toes. They manage to stay icy cold regardless of warm socks and thick blankets. This information is important to you, I know. As of current, I remain drinking iced coffee even if the weather is not permitting. And as of current, I'm reading a book so good that I have to pace myself so that I don't finish it off too quickly.

My element is fire, what's yours?

I'm done with "comfort"...it got me no where. The best thing I've ever done is taking myself out of my element. It was uncomfortable; I writhed like a fish out of water, but I like that feeling. I like never knowing what will happen next. I'll figure it out once I get there. When you plan things you have this expectation and if it is not met--disappointment ensues.

Monday

The Weight of Being Human

The 22-year-old Francesca Woodman abruptly ended her life by leaping out of her apartment window. Many believe her remaining photographs foreshadowed her sudden death. Regardless, this short lived artist left an inspiring body of work that adds a voice for women photographers everywhere.

Her work is a narrative on the transient self. She is a fleeting mass that re-discovers herself in every image. I love this woman.

Sunday

chino otsuka

Tokyo4-3-506, a study series on displacement of the self in abandoned homes of Tokyo. It's quiet, calm, and definitely eerie. The three main ingredients which I favor.

Nikki S. Lee a.k.a chameleon

Lee effortlessly transforms and fuses herself into the ethnic and social groups she photographs. Her take on identity is genius! My favorite works is her Parts series where her male companion is conveniently cropped leaving only an arm, a leg, or a torso. The images in this series conveys an existing relationship, but the question is: is this an idealistic loving, thriving, relationship?

she becomes them:

Saturday

My last entry was in February of last year. I mentioned grad school and well, I'm considering it now. I submitted my first application to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) on Monday. I'm also applying to Columbia College in Chicago, RISD, and Calarts. I don't know how I will be paying for this, but I'll figure it out once I get there.
